Hope is the Thing with Feathers

Thursday, October 28th, 2004

Saw this piece of Emily Dickinson (from Part One: Life) on the wall today as I will filling out Spencer’s pre-admission paperwork at Children’s Hospital.

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the [...]

WordPress is Coming Up

Thursday, October 28th, 2004

I am installing WordPress on my blog so I can have comments and have articles be in multiple categories. Pardon the appearance and temporary loss of the old content. As of this posting update, I believe I have migrated all of the original content except for my bicycle training log. My original blog remains online [...]

We are Home

Tuesday, October 26th, 2004

We brought Spencer home from the hospital last night at 6 PM. The weekend went well, all things considered.

Friday, we spent time with Deanna, the child life specialist who helped teach Spencer about the upcoming procedure. Spencer’s doctor, Dr. Sharp, is fantastic. He’s very communicative and helpful. Spencer likes him. We like him. He [...]

The Word They Say is Leukemia

Friday, October 22nd, 2004

Today has been the most utterly rotten day I have had as a parent. Spencer, our four year old son, has leukemia. The day has been a complete blur of waiting, dread, fear, and learning. I invented a new word today: “lamous”. It is a combination of “lame” and “famous” and means “becoming (mildly) famous for doing something completely lame”. While bored out of my skull one day, I finally finished the words to “I Code Alone” my parody of George Thorogood’s “I Drink Alone”. I used to threaten my [...]

Ride for the Roses 2004

Monday, October 18th, 2004

After two months off the bike and six weeks since I last had a serious non-bike workout, it was pretty obvious that the 70 or 100 mile rides would no be a good plan, so I targeted the 40 mile ride keeping heart rate up just to see if I could. Finished fine, albeit slowly. [...]

Peloton Appreciation Dinner

Saturday, October 16th, 2004

The ride is tomorrow. Last night, Rachel and I attended the Peloton Appreciation Dinner, an event honoring Peloton Project members and other sponsors. We got to attend because I raised $5150. A summary, then some thoughts:

Robin Williams is very nice, and hysterically funny
Lance Armstrong cannot sing
Sheryl Crow can
There are a whole lot of amazing and [...]
