Numb as a Statue

We’re totally numb. We just got news that Rachel’s Mom, Diane Brimmer, appears to have a second cancer. No firm diagnosis, but it appears to be in the liver. She’s apparently got pneumonia so they aren’t doing a biopsy, but CBC with liver function points at the liver and X-ray shows lesions, so even without the biopsy the oncologist has put her on chemotherapy. We don’t really have details as Rachel’s parents don’t ask much and the oncologist seems to be light on details.

On top of everything going on with Spencer, we don’t have the emotions left to respond to this. I can now fully relate (and am currently listening to) Numb as a Statue from The Wind – Warren Zevon’s last album before he died of cancer.

While I have your attention, please go visit the Tour of Hope web site and make the promise to support the search for a cure.

Life does go on, and Spencer and I did a bunch of little art project and playing today. We had a picnic in the backyard after doing watercolors and pencil drawings of plants in our yard. Spencer and I did our first ride practicing for the Ride for the Roses 2005. I’m registered (and as always encourage you to donate now), but he’s not yet. We rode about 2.5-3 miles on my mountain bike towing the Trail-a-bike. His balance improved radically just today and he can pedal without throwing our balance off much at all. He’s committed to the 6 mile Fun Ride after today, but remains skeptical about the possibilities of 25 miles. We’re visiting the hematologist/oncologist for blood work and IV chemotherapy tomorrow. Spencer is scared about getting his port accessed even though he knows it won’t hurt.
