Happy Birthday, Jacob

Jacob is one year old today!

He is his own little boy. Different from the start from his older brother, Spencer. He laughs hysterically with ease, sometimes at strange things and sometimes simply at watching his mother eat dinner. He is a speed demon at crawling. He is on the cusp of learning to walk, taking the occasional one or two steps before falling (and, of course, laughing) or dropping to his knees to crawl – still a faster way to move. At his one year doctor appointment he began a new kind of crawling, on his hands and feet – bear crawling. It’s pretty awkward, so my guess is it won’t last long. He loves to shake his bed back and forth, sometimes to say “no” but mostly just to get dizzy. Spencer can get him to nod vigorously. He’s got good upper body strength for a proto-toddler – he managed to escape once from his crib, thankfully with no major injuries. He is making the transition to eating solid foods, and unlike his older brother, Jacob still loves vegetables.

We started at day care this week and he loves it. He continues his trend of not wanting to nap when there are other exciting things going on, so this week his longest nap was two hours. As a result, he’s going to bed a little earlier, but still sleeping through the night. Time for exposures to new people, new activitives, and new germs. Time to build up the immune system.

At his one year doctor visit, we skipped the live virus vaccinations since Spencer will be immunosuppressed soon and we don’t want Jacob shedding measles or chicken pox for Spencer to catch as either of those are an automatic ticket to serious hospital time for Spencer. We may be able to get Jacob’s immunizations back on track in August. We’re getting a consult on that.

Birthday party tomorrow for Spencer. We’ll leave Jacob with KidSpace – since he’s one now, he’s allowed at their facility which does short term child care (4 hour limit during the week – let’s them not count as day care) and Spencer’s party is at a gymnastics place, not very baby/toddler friendly.

Happy Birthday, Jacob.
