Riding for Roses - Issue 1

Spencer Rides for the Roses

Five year old Austin cancer survivor rides to support cancer survivors.

On October 22, 2004, Austin resident Spencer Sartin was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. On October 23, 2005, he is cycling 40 miles to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. During four days in the hospital after his diagnosis, Spencer and his father talked about ways to fight against cancer. Spencer decided that he wanted to raise $25,000 for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, a cause his Dad has been supporting for years.

Spencer’s treatment has been going very well. He’s been in remission since the 7th day of treatment and, if all goes well, faces 2-1/2 years more of chemotherapy before he is done. Ever since his energy retuned he has exemplified the idea that Life is for Living and continues to enjoy life despite chemotherapy and its side effects. During his treatment we have benefited from information and support from many organizations, including the LAF and organizations supported by the LAF. Cancer and its effects do not end with remission. Your donation will enable the LAF in their efforts to give cancer survivors the support they need. Spencer will be riding the Ride for the Roses as stoker on a trail-a-bike with his father up front as captain.

How to Donate

There are two simple ways to donate. The preferred method is to use the web. Donate online to support cancer survivors and you can use the secure donation form at the Lance Armstrong Foundation using your credit card. For those who prefer, you can send a LAF donation form after filling in “Spencer Sartin” for the rider name and “200254831” for the rider number and your information. Then put as large a number as you can afford in the amount and include a check or credit card information.

Either way you donate, please check if your employer has matching donations and submit the paperwork as described on the form or the LAF web site. Please email leave a comment here if you have any questions or would like us to wear a bib tag in memory of or in honor of a cancer survivor. Thank you for your donation and your support.

About the LAF

Founded in 1997 by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong, the LAF believes that in the battle with cancer unity is strength, knowledge is power and attitude is everything. From the moment of diagnosis, the LAF provides the practical information and tools people living with cancer need to live strong.

The Peloton Project is the LAF’s major grassroots fundraising and outreach initiative that brings together a diverse group of volunteers dedicated to helping people living with cancer live strong. In 2004, 7200 Peloton Project members collected more than $5.6 million in donations and we were represented in all 50 states and in 21 countries. Your donation to the Peloton Project will help the LAF support people affected by cancer through advocacy, research, education and public health programs.
