Working the Crowd
We are filling in context material for the Discovery Network show by taping key events during the Tour de France. They wanted some footage of us watching the mountain days so I made sure Spencer came with me both Saturday and Sunday to Central Market for Tour Watch 2005—Saturday was bit of a bust with rain reducing the crowd and limiting taping chances. Sunday was perfect and Spencer milked it.
On the way down, I asked him if he would hand out some Riding for Roses newsletters and LiveStrong wrist bands to the crowd. He came back from one table holding a five dollar bill and said “I don’t know why she did it, but that woman gave me five dollars”. It sort of took off from there. Spencer gave out about a hundred wrist bands, about a hundred newsletters, and came back with $361.48 in donations that I will convert to a Teller Check and mail to the LAF.
When we were in the hospital starting Spencer’s chemotherapy in late October, 2004, I made him a deal that I would help him raise $25,000 so he could meet Lance Armstrong, have a private ride with other big fundraisers, and do the 40 mile ride together at the Ride for the Roses. The Ride for the Roses is the Lance Armstrong Foundation grass roots fundraising event. This year the ride weekend is October 21-23 and Saturday, October 22, is Spencer’s one year leukemia diagnosis anniversary. Today has Spencer’s unofficial tally at over $9000. The official tally is $8,862.88 raised to support cancer survivors. You can help bring it over $10,000 and eventually up to $25,000 by donating to support cancer survivors and Spencer’s Ride for the Roses. Please help us in supporting the LAF and helping me keep my promise to Spencer.
