Austin Shaves to Cure Cancer

Spencer and Rob after shaving heads to fight pediatric cancer

It’s over. We did it. I lost. Badly. You can still donate to help fight pediatric cancer. You can still attend the Austin Cancer Awareness fair at the beatiful TDS Exotic Game Ranch from 11 AM to 2 PM, March 18, 2006. The fair will include fun and games for the kids, information on cancer, and the opportunity to cheer on people shaving their heads for St. Baldrick’s.

St. Baldrick’s is an annual event to raise money to help find cures for pediatric cancers. Funds raised support the fight against childhood cancer through CureSearch and other efforts.

Spencer was diagnosed with pre-B-call acute lymphoblastic leukemia on October 22, 2004. Sixty years ago, his disease would have been a death sentence and doctors would have helped him die comfortably. Pediatric oncology research has improved that. Today, kids in his circumstances have an 85% chance of five year recurrence free survival. However, they may face long term side effects from chemotherapy that include learning disorders and increased chances of second cancers later in life. More research can improve the odds and decrease the side effects. Many pediatric cancers are not currently as treatable as ALL. We need research to find more and better treatments.
